For almost everybody it is a life-changing experience. This book is intended to serve as a guide to bounce back in life and get up on your feet as it was the way earlier. I came across many people, have seen them crying on the day of diagnosis and so have seen them with tears of joy after completing the treatment. This is a depiction of the rollercoaster of emotions which I have witnessed and felt connected to the patients. We all learn from our mistakes but wise are those who learn from other’s mistakes. This book is an effort to encompass the misconceptions, fears, social stigma, and course of treatment and ultimately how to deal with the situations to resurface as a winner.

My Thoughts

Before I start, I would just like to say that this is not exactly a review of this book. It is just a way for me to share my thoughts and reading experience with this book. Also, I have no personal experience with Cancer. I merely picked up this book out of interest.

Tips for Happiness in the Shadow of Cancer is a self-help book for people who have been affected by cancer. It can also be considered as a motivational guide for any other tough phase in a person’s life. This book is written by Dr. Meenu Walia who has treated many cancer patients in her career.

The book is divided into chapters that each deal with a specific phase one goes through with this disease. They are short and to the point. There are a few very fitting quotes prior to each chapter. There is also a list of practical tips and do’s and don’ts that should be followed. I liked that the author doesn’t sugarcoat anything and is straight-forward in the way she says things. The writing style is excellent and very conversational which makes the book a fast read.

The latter section of the book consists of accounts of cancer survivors in their own words. They share how being positive and not giving up helped them survive as well as the people that helped them in their journey. I loved reading this part and all of these people are an inspiration.

The book concludes with a list of resources that can be read for further knowledge.

This book is beautifully delivered. There are practical tips that are specific to dealing with cancer and also, tips relating to other hardships in life. This book is obviously written with great experience. It radiates positivity with ways we can improve our lives.

This is the first cancer-related book I have read and as a self-help book, it is one of the best ones I have come across. This is a short book and the way it is written with brief chapters makes it a great read. This is the kind of book we can and we should consult from time to time to gain inspiration.

I highly recommend this book.

About The Author

Dr. Meenu Walia, who has spent over 21 years in the medical field, is currently associated with Max Cancer Centre, Patparganj Delhi as Director Medical Oncology and Hematology.
