Here they are.

Wonder

The word “wholesome” was popularized after this movie came out. Okay, maybe it wasn’t but trust me, this movie is perfection.

The movie, based on a novel of the same name, follows ten-year-old Auggie who has a rare facial abnormality when he starts going to a private school after being home-schooled all his life. You will smile and sob while watching this movie. You will learn to be a better human being and understand the value of kindness in this world. I would recommend this movie to every person of every age, regardless of what type of movies they like watching. Also, this movie is directed by Stephen Chbosky a.k.a the author of my favorite book of all time.

Rocketman

The price of fame. I think that sums up the message of this movie. The only Elton John song I really know is Your Song. I watched this movie because I really enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody. The singer’s life is definitely inspiring in many ways. I enjoyed the movie and would recommend it, I just failed to form a personal connection to it since I’m not familiar with Elton’s work.

The Thing About Harry

You know that feeling when you’re so frustrated at the characters because they are being idiots and just don’t realize that they should be together? That’s the kind of hopeful pining you’ll feel while watching this movie. It’s a feel-good romance and has a road trip. What more do you want?

The Half of It

And this is the type of movie that goes beyond just being a feel-good romance. Keeping the catfishing aside, this is a sweet movie with a realistic turn of events. The cinematography is soothing which made it a different watch from the usual loud teen romances for me.

Before Sunrise

This was highly recommended to me by a good friend. Two strangers in Europe walking around the city and talking about anything and everything, what could go wrong? Nothing except a major yearning to a) travel b) fall in love. Neither of which was gonna happen to me in quarantine. I will admit that none of the conversations that the strangers had stuck with me. I’ll probably rewatch this movie at some point to grasp them.

Someone Great

My heart, my hips, my body, my love
Trying to find a part of me that you didn’t touch
Gave up on me like I was a bad drug
Now I’m searching for signs in a haunted club
Our songs, our films, united we stand
Our country, guess it was a lawless land
Quiet my fears with the touch of your hand
Paper cut stings from our paper thin plans
My time, my wine, my spirit, my trust
Trying to find a part of me you didn’t take up
Gave you too much but it wasn’t enough
But I’ll be all right, it’s just a thousand cuts

– Death by a Thousand Cuts by Taylor Swift

You might’ve have guessed by now the reason I watched this movie. I had to see the movie that inspired Taylor Swift to write these heartbreaking breakup lyrics. I wasn’t disappointed. This movie simply showed what someone goes through when their heart shatters. How they search for signs in haunted clubs and how their heart feels like it’s covered with cuts. This movie isn’t a total downer though. It’ll make you laugh and dance to Lizzo songs, but it will also make you cry by the end.

Dear Zindagi

This movie does a good job of normalizing seeking therapy and being confused in your 20s for the mainstream Bollywood audience. I liked watching the different emotions Kaira goes through regarding her career, love life, going back home, etc. because it was quite an accurate portrayal of many young adults. I would definitely recommend this to you if you’re in a place in your life where you are figuring things out.

Happiest Season

I really needed to watch Kristin Stewart in something other than Twilight. This Christmas romance movie follows a lesbian couple as they visit one of their parents’ house for the holiday. The parents don’t know that their daughter is into women. What makes the situation even more complex is when the ex meets the current girlfriend. I know this sounds like a lot but this movie doesn’t actually have over-the-top drama and is pretty wholesome to watch.

Call Me By Your Name

I will admit that the main reason I enjoyed this movie is because it is set in Italy and the shots are stunning. It is also slow-paced and romanticizes things like reading and playing the piano which I’m a sucker for. The romance is problematic as it is between a minor and an adult. I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether to give this movie a try or not.

Miss Americana

I’m a Swiftie before I’m a human. Kidding. This documentary is a must-watch not just for fans of Taylor Swift but for all women; for artists irrespective of whether or not they are in the music industry; and for anyone with a burning passion to achieve their dreams. Taylor is unfiltered here. She shows how she was a young artist who thrived on the validation of people and how she had to overcome this mindset to retain her sanity. The director, Lana Wilson, doesn’t paint her as a perfect human being. Her flaws and mistakes are shown in this documentary as much as her strength and perseverance.

I hope you got some recommendations from this post!

Did you watch any good movies recently?
