Harry ignored them.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>What did you tell her?&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I told her it&#8217;s a Hungarian Horntail,&#8221; said Ginny, turning a page of the newspaper idly. &#8220;Much more macho.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Thanks,&#8221; said Harry, grinning. &#8220;And what did you tell her Ron\u2019s got?&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A Pygmy Puff, but I didn\u2019t say where.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cHe accused me of being Dumbledore&#8217;s man through and through.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;How very rude of him.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;I told him I was.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Dumbledore opened his mouth to speak and then closed it again. Fawkes the phoenix let out a low, soft, musical cry. To Harry&#8217;s intense embarrassment, he suddenly realized that Dumbledore&#8217;s bright blue eyes looked rather watery, and stared hastily at his own knee. When Dumbledore spoke, however, his voice was quite steady. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;I am very touched, Harry.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cSometimes you remind me a lot of James. He called it my &#8216;furry little problem&#8217; in company. Many people were under the impression that I owned a badly behaved rabbit.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cWe&#8217;ll be there, Harry,&#8221; said Ron<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;What?&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;At your Aunt and Uncle&#8217;s house,&#8221; said Ron, &#8220;And then we&#8217;ll go with you wherever you&#8217;re going.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;No-&#8221; said Harry quickly; he hadn&#8217;t counted on this, he had meant them to understand that he was undertaking the most dangerous journey alone. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;You said it once before,&#8221; said Hermione quickly, &#8220;that there was time to turn back if we wanted to. We&#8217;ve had time, haven&#8217;t we? We&#8217;re with you whatever happens.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cDumbledore will only leave from Hogwarts when there are none loyal to him!\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t think you will kill me Draco. Killing is not nearly as easy as the innocent believe.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cNobody&#8217;s ever asked me to a party before, as a friend. Is that why you dyed your eyebrow, for the party? Should I do mine too?\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cHarry looked around; there was Ginny running toward him; she had a hard blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. And without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her. After several long moments, or it might have been half an hour-or possibly several sunlit days- they broke apart.The room had gone very quiet. Then several people wolf-whistled and there was an outbreak of nervous giggling. Harry looked over the top of Ginny\u2019s head to see Dean Thomas holding a shattered glass in his hand, and Romilda Vane looking as though she might throw something. Hermione was beaming, but Harry\u2019s eyes sought Ron. At last he found him, still clutching the Cup and wearing an expression appropriate to having been clubbed over the head. For a fraction of a second they looked at each other, then Ron gave a tiny jerk of the head that Harry understood to mean, Well \u2014 if you must. The creature in his chest roaring in triumph, he grinned down at Ginny and gestured wordlessly out of the portrait hole. A long walk in the grounds seemed indicated, during which \u2014 if they had time \u2014 they might discuss the match.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cAnd Harry saw very clearly as he sat there under the hot sun how people who cared about him had stood in front of him one by one, his mother, his father, his godfather, and finally Dumbledore, all determined to protect him; but now that was over. He could not let anybody else stand between him and Voldemort; he must abandon forever the illusion he ought to have lost at the age of one, that the shelter of a parent\u2019s arms meant that nothing could hurt him. There was no waking from this nightmare, no comforting whisper in the dark that he was safe really, that it was all in his imagination; the last and greatest of his protectors had died, and he was more alone than he had ever been.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cWhat do I care how &#8216;e looks? I am good-looking enough for both of us, I theenk! All these scars show is zat my husband is brave!\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cI see a light in the kitchen. Let us not deprive Molly any longer of the chance to deplore how thin you are.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cIt was important, Dumbledore said, to fight, and fight again, and keep fighting, for only then could evil be kept at bay, though never quite eradicated. . . .\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cYes, Harry, you can love, said Dumbledore, who looked as though he knew perfectly well what Harry had just refrained from saying. Which, given everything that has happened to you, is a great and remarkable thing.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cFrom this point forth, we shall be leaving the firm foundation of fact and journeying together through the murky marshes of memory into thickets of wildest guesswork.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cHis hand closed automatically around the fake Horcrux but in spite of everything, in spite of the dark and twisting path he saw stretching ahead for himself, in spite of the final meeting with Voldemort he knew must come whether in a month in a year or in ten, he felt his heart lift at the thought that there was still one last golden day of peace left to enjoy with Ron and Hermione.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cWe must try not to sink beneath our anguish, Harry, but battle on.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cYou see!&#8221; said a strained voice. Tonks was glaring at Lupin. &#8220;She still wants to marry him, even though he&#8217;s been bitten! She doesn&#8217;t care!&#8221; <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s different,&#8221; said Lupin, barely moving his lips and looking suddenly tense. &#8220;Bill will not be a full werewolf. The cases are completely-&#8221; <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;But I don&#8217;t care either, I don&#8217;t care!&#8221; said Tonks, seizing the front of Lupin&#8217;s robes and shaking them. &#8220;I&#8217;ve told you a million times&#8230;.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And the meaning of Tonk&#8217;s Patronus and her mouse-colored hair, and the reason she had come running to find Dumbledore when she had heard a rumor someone had been attacked by Greyback, all suddenly became clear to Harry; it had not been Sirius that Tonks had fallen in love with after all. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;And I&#8217;ve told you a million times,&#8221; said Lupin, refusing to meet her eyes, staring at the floor, &#8220;that I am too old for you, too poor&#8230;.too dangerous&#8230;.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;I&#8217;ve said all along you&#8217;re taking a ridiculous line on this, Remus,&#8221; said Mrs. Weasley over Fleur&#8217;s shoulder as she patted her on the back. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;I am not being ridiculous,&#8221; said Lupin steadily. &#8220;Tonks deserves somebody young and whole.&#8221; <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;But she wants you,&#8221; said Mr. Weasley, with a small smile. &#8220;And after all, Remus, young and whole men do not necessarily remain so.&#8221; <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>He gestured sadly at his son, lying between them. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;This is&#8230;.not the moment to discuss it,&#8221; said Lupin, avoiding everybody&#8217;s eyes as he looked around distractedly. &#8220;Dumbledore is dead&#8230;.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Dumbledore would have been happier than anybody to think that there was a little more love in the world,&#8221; said Professor McGonagall curtly&#8230;\u201d <\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"quote_book_link_1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cAnd he knew that at that moment, they understood each other perfectly, and when he told her what he was going to do now, she would not say \u2018be careful\u2019 or \u2018don\u2019t do it\u2019, but she would accept his decision because she would not have expected anything less of him.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cI would rather die than betray his trust.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;That&#8217;s not saying much, seeing as you&#8217;re already dead,&#8221; Ron observed.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Once again, you show all the sensitivity of a blunt axe,&#8221; said Nearly Headless Nick in affronted tones.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cPromise me you\u2019ll look after yourself \u2026 stay out of trouble \u2026\u2019<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u2018I always do, Mrs Weasley,\u2019 said Harry. \u2018I like a quiet life, you know me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cBut you&#8217;ve been too busy saving the Wizarding world. Well &#8230; I can&#8217;t say I&#8217;m surprised. I knew this would happen in the end. I knew you wouldn&#8217;t be happy unless you were hunting Voldemort. Maybe that&#8217;s why I like you so much.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cDumbledore paused, and although his voice remained light and calm, and he gave no obvious sign of anger, Harry felt a kind of chill emanating from him and noticed that the Dursleys drew very slightly closer together.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cYou did not do as I asked. You have never treated Harry as a son. He has known nothing but neglect and often cruelty at your hands. The best that can be said is that he has at least escaped the appalling damage you have inflicted upon the unfortunate boy sitting between you.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cProfessor, why couldn&#8217;t we just Apparate directly into your old colleague&#8217;s house?&#8217;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8216;Because it would be quite as rude as kicking down the front door,&#8217; said Dumbledore. &#8216;Courtesy dictates that we offer fellow wizards the opportunity of denying us entry.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cBut for heaven\u2019s sake \u2014 you\u2019re <i>wizards<\/i>! You can do <i>magic<\/i>! Surely you can sort out \u2014 well \u2014 <i>anything<\/i>!\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Scrimgeour turned slowly on the spot and exchanged an incredulous look with Fudge, who really did manage a smile this time as he said kindly, \u201cThe trouble is, the other side can do magic too, Prime Minister.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cSomewhere out in the darkness, a phoenix was singing in a way Harry had never heard before: a stricken lament of terrible beauty.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cHarry did not really listen. A warmth was spreading through him that had nothing to do with the sunlight; a tight obstruction in his chest seemed to be dissolving. He knew that Ron and Hermione were more shocked than they were letting on, but the mere fact that they were still there on either side of him, speaking bracing words of comfort, not shrinking from him as though he were contaminated or dangerous, was worth more than he could ever tell them.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cListen, Hermione, I can tell it\u2019s not a girl. I can just tell.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cThe truth is that you don\u2019t think a girl would have been clever enough,\u201d said Hermione angrily.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cHow can I have hung round with you for five years and not think girls are clever?\u201d said Harry, stung by this.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>\u201cIt was, he thought, the difference between being dragged into the arena to face a battle to the death and walking into the arena with your head held high. Sirius wouldn&#8217;t have wanted that, would he? And anyway, life&#8217;s too short&#8230; look at Madam Bones, looks at Emmeline Vance&#8230; it could be me next, couldn&#8217;t it?
