A Chest’s Tale is the first story in The Mystery Crackers series by author Jinal Shailesh Doshi. It takes place in the town of Jhiljhila. Fourteen-year-old twins- Prash and Nish along with their friend Hriday come across a puzzle carved in a stone. When they reach home, they find their fathers in possession of an old chest that was brought during a flood. The chest would not open and the mystery progresses from there.
The story is very mysterious and makes you intrigued right from the start. It has a few surprises that keep the suspense alive. The characters are interesting though we don’t get to know them deeply since the book is more plot-driven. The story is very well-written. I liked that the writing wasn’t monotonous which happens frequently with children/ middle-grade books.
The book is a very light-hearted and refreshing read. I liked that it didn’t glorify hiding things from the police and handling everything on your own. It showed that it pays off to be honest and to do the right thing.
I really enjoyed reading this story. It was an engaging mystery that was perfectly wrapped up in the short length. It wasn’t mind-blowing but there were surprises to keep the interest of the reader. Fans of Enid Blyton’s mysteries would really enjoy it. Not only for children, I think it’s a great book to read for adults as well if they need a break from books with heavier content.
