The story of Mercy Of Gods and Men by Aditya Mathur is set in three kingdoms that are at war. With rebellions, conspiracies and lots of action, it makes for an exciting read.

This is the author’s first novel and I have to say I’m impressed. The writing was quite good despite a few errors. The chapters were short which made the book a fast read.

I could see how the plot was inspired by Game Of Thrones but it was also different all the same. Magic, politics, conspiracy even dragons are a part of it. It did take me a while to get into the book but it got more interesting as it progressed. The story moves at a very good pace and doesn’t get boring.

There is a wide set of characters and we read the book through all their perspectives. I liked that the author managed to tell a bit about all of them and wrap up the book in 300 pages. However, at times I felt like they made very compulsive decisions and their moods changed too often.

As a fantasy book, what this story lacked was proper world-building. It would have been more fascinating if we knew more about the people and the back-story of the kingdoms.

Pick this up if you’re looking for a quick and entertaining fantasy read.
